CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Both the Creighton men's and women's cross country teams took third place in the 2012 Saluki Invitational, which was contested at the Southern Illinois University Cross Country Course on Saturday morning in Carbondale, Ill.
Creighton's men were led by Drew Prescott, who took 18th in a field of 51 with a time of 27:17 on the 8,000-meter course. Northern Iowa's Brett Egan won his third straight race with a time of 25:15, while host Southern Illinois won the team title with 20 points after finishing with the next seven runners. Other men's teams to compete included Northern Iowa and Millikin.
Other top performers on the men's side for the Jays were seniors Mike Hitt (20th, 28:04) and Tom Shimp (21st, 28:05) and sophomores Steven Raimondi (23rd, 28:27) and Tin Nguyen (28:37).
Creighton's women also took third place in a field of six teams and 58 runners with a score of 78.
Bluejay sophomore Courtney Sawle claimed eighth place, clocking a time of 19:07 on the 5K course. Not far behind Sawle was freshman Emily Mauser, who took 15th with a time of 19:55.
Rounding out CU's top five runners were freshman Emily Peterson (18th, 20:03), junior Meagan Wilderson (21st, 20:14) and Anna Weirick (26th, 20:47).
Both Creighton teams return to the course next Saturday with the Charles Bowles Invitational in Salem, Ore.
