TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Creighton women’s golf
team finished its spring season 10th at the State Farm Missouri
Valley Conference Championships. The par-72 6,272 yard Country Club of Terre Haute played
host to the tournament.
The Jays finished with a team
score of 992. Missouri State won the event by shooting a 910 over the 54-hole tournament, securing an NCAA Tournament bid in the process.
Illinois State comes in second with a 913. Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois
finished in a tie for third with a 916.
Illinois State’s Katie Jean
won the individual title shooting a 220. Southern Illinois teammates Cassie
Rushing (222) and Alisha Matthews (223) finished second and third respectively.
Mary Cathryn Rau led the
Jays. The freshman finished in a tie for 30th
with a 240. Freshman Rachel Thompson finished tied for 37th with a
246. Her third round 77 was the lowest of any Jay in the tournament. Junior
Celeste Gassman finished 43rd with a 253. Freshman Katie Morel’s 258 left her two spots
behind Gassman at 45th. Junior Jill Stuckenschneider finished 46th
with a 261.
Bradley's Thea Hedemann was
named the Newcomer of the Year. Northern Iowa's Brittany Atterbury was named
the Golfer of the Year and Missouri State coach Kevin Kane was named the Coach
of the Year.
The All-Conference team
featured Missouri State's Kelsey Welber and Catherine Dolan, Illinois State's
Katie Jean and Brianna Cooper, Northern Iowa's Brittany Atterbury, Wichita
State's Gretchen Huhnerkoch, Southern Illinois' Cassie Rushing, Alisha Matthews
and Margaret Gilley, and Bradley's Hedemann.
The Bluejays will return six
golfers for the 2012-2013 season.
