DES MOINES, Iowa - Kyle Obermeier's Flight A consolation title led the charge on the final day of competition for the Jays at the Drake Fall Invitational on Sunday. The senior, who won the Flight B singles in the same invitational a season ago, finished the tournament 2-1 in singles play.
Obermeier defeated Mya Smith-Dennis of Gustavus Adolphus in the Flight A Consolation in a three set, hard fought battle. After dropping the opening set 6-7, Obermeier finished with a 7-6, 10-8 win to earn the consolation title.
Also finishing play in the Flight A consolations, Billy Paluch defeated Maksum Bartiuk of Northern Illinois 6-3, 6-2 and J.T. Christian defeated Amrik Donkena of GA 7-5, 6-1.
In Flight B action, Sean Mathison, who was moved up after finishing 2-0 on the opening day of singles play, fell to Chris Speer of Iowa in three sets, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2, to finish his play in the invitational. Connor Gilmore of Iowa defeated Ryan Norman in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
Finally, in the Flight C singles, Elliott Baker dropped a three plus hour match to Grant Tesmer of Drake in the semi-finals, falling 6-7, 6-1, 6-4. Lorenz Laurel, who also started yesterday 2-0, fell to Garrett Dunn of Iowa in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
The Jays will be in action again next weekend when they take part in the Omaha Collegiate Invitational at the Koch Family Tennis Center in Omaha.
