Steve Brace is in his 23rd year overall at Creighton and eighth in his current capacity as Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Operations.
In his present role, Brace is responsible for the oversight of all direct support services provided to the student-athletes, including Academic Coordinating, Athletic Medicine, Strength & Conditioning and Facilities Maintenance.
Brace spent the previous years as the head athletic trainer for the Bluejays, where he was responsible for the coordination of the health care for all of CU’s student-athletes. He also helped to create, implement and later coordinate the Internship Athletic Training Education Program and supervised three Staff Certified Athletic Trainers. His also coordinated travel arrangements for the CU men’s basketball program.
Brace arrived in Omaha after working three years as an assistant athletic trainer at Kansas State University, where he worked primarily with K-State’s men’s basketball and baseball programs. He also helped manage the budget and supervise students enrolled in the Athletic Training curriculum.
Brace earned his Master of Science degree in Physical Education with a major emphasis in Sports Medicine at Syracuse University in 1987. While at SU, he was involved with the prevention, care and rehabilitation for all student-athletes and worked with the football, men’s basketball and lacrosse programs.
Brace graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1985, where he picked up his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education with an option in Athletic Training and Teacher’s Certification and a minor specialization in Health Education. Brace worked as a student athletic trainer at EIU, working with football, wrestling and men’s soccer.
In addition to his Creighton duties, Brace has stayed active in the community and is involved in numerous outside events. From 1991 to 2000, Brace served as Medical Coordinator of the College World Series, where he coordinated medical coverage for all teams, practices and games. He continues today as a host trainer for the CWS, and also serves as a site coordinator for the NCAA drug testing program at the CWS.
In 1996, Brace spent more than a month on the road with the US Olympic Men’s Basketball Team, 'Dream Team III' as a volunteer athletic trainer. In addition to working the Olympics in Atlanta, he also traveled with the squad during a five week exhibition tour preceding the games.
Brace has also volunteered at events such as the 1994 US Olympic Festival, 1993 World University Summer Games and the 1991 US Olympic Festival
He also served as president of the Nebraska State Athletic Trainers Association from 1994-96 and is Faculty Moderator of Creighton’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a position he has held since 1995.
Brace and his wife, Robin, are the parents of an 12-year old son, Ryan.
