Camp Overview

The Creighton Softball coaching staff would like to invite you to our 2014 Summer Softball Camps. These camps provide an opportunity for players of all ages to learn and develop their skills under the personal attention of the Bluejay Softball Staff.  Fundamentals will be emphasized through individual and group instruction combined with drill work to help each player become the best she can be. 

 Ages 8-13

Junior Jays Hitting Camp                        $55
June 11      9:00 – 11:30 a.m.

Instruction will focus on teaching players the proper swing mechanics to promote bat speed and consistency at the plate. Each player will go through a variety of supervised hitting stations to reinforce concepts being taught. Campers are required to provide their own helmet and bat.

Junior Jays Fundamental Camp              $55
June 11     1:00 – 3:30 p.m. 

Camp includes proper method of warm-up with strong emphasis on throwing and receiving fundamentals. Fielding mechanics, and base running will all be addressed through extensive drill work.

Junior Jays Pitching Camp                      $55 
June 12    9:00 – 11:30 a.m.

Instruction will focus on teaching proper method of warm-up and stretch mechanics as well as emphasis on correct delivery and pitching grips. Pitching stations will offer participants the opportunity to improve upon newly acquired skills and information. Campers are required to provide their own catcher.


Ages 14 & up

Senior Jays Hitting 1- Fundamentals        $55
June 9      9:00 – 11:30 a.m.

Instruction will focus on the proper swing mechanics to promote increased bat speed and consistency at the plate. Each player will go through a variety of supervised hitting stations to reinforce concepts being taught. Campers are required to provide their own helmet and bat.

Senior Jays Hitting 2-Slapping/Short Game $55
June 9    1:00 - 3:30 p.m.

Camp includes right and left hand slapping and short game fundamentals. Situational bunting including sacrifice, surprise, triple bunt, and squeeze, and slapping will be taught through drill work, machine work, and live arm. Campers are required to provide their own helmet and bat.

Senior Jays Defense 1- Fundamentals    $55 
June 10    9:00  – 11:30 a.m. 

Camp includes proper method of warm-up with strong emphasis on throwing and receiving fundamentals. Fielding mechanics and base running will all be addressed through extensive and more challenging drill work.

Senior Jays Defense 2- Positional Play   $55
June 10     1:00 - 3:30 p.m.

Instruction will focus on positional specific techniques. Players will be divided so outfield, infield corner & middle, pitcher, and catcher mechanics can be addressed. In addition, situational instruction will be incorporated.

Senior Jays Pitching Camp                       $55 
June 12    9:00 - 11:30 a.m.

Instruction will focus on teaching proper method of warm-up and stretch mechanics as well as emphasis on correct delivery and pitching grips. Specific pitches will be addressed individually.  Additionally, the mental aspects of pitching will be specifically addressed for this age group. Campers are required to provide their own catcher.


General Information

FACILITIES: Creighton’s indoor hitting facility located in the Kitty Gaughan Pavilion adjacent to the baseball and softball fields located on 23rd and Burt will be the site of the hitting camps. The softball field will serve as the site of the fundamental and pitching camps. Lunch will NOT be provided; however, campers can bring their lunch and dine in the Kitty Gaughan Pavilion in between camps.

EQUIPMENT: Campers should bring their own bat and helmet for the hitting camps, and glove for the fundamental and pitching camps along with comfortable workout attire. All pitchers must provide their own catcher for the pitching clinics. You can wear tennis shoes in all of our indoor facilities, and both cleats and tennis shoes are required for all defensive and pitching camps. Water bottles are also recommended for all summer camps.

HEALTH CARE: All campers must carry their own insurance. Creighton Softball Camp and Creighton University cannot be responsible for injuries sustained at the camp.

REGISTRATION: All campers must have a registration and parental consent form on file prior to participating.  Registration will take place in the Kitty Gaughan Pavilion for all camps. Each camper will receive a Creighton Softball T-shirt! (one shirt per camper for the week).

** Creighton Softball Camps are open to any and all entrants, limited only by number, age, grade level, and/or gender.

REFUND POLICY: Notification must be received at least one week prior to the first day of camp for 100% refund of the camp registration. A 50% refund will be given for notification received between June 2-7. Notification June 8 or after will not be refunded.

Brent Vigness
Head Coach

Brent Vigness is in his 21st season as the head coach of the Creighton Softball Team and owns a record of 664-470-3. The 1998, 2007, 2008 and 2013 MVC Coach of the Year has guided the Bluejays to seven regular season conference titles and the 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2010 MVC Tournament titles as well as berths to the NCAA Regional Tournament. In 2005, the Bluejays compiled a 44-13 record, making their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance. After a slight rebuilding year, the Bluejays compiled two straight 40+ wins seasons in 2007 and 2008, earning an MVC Tournament Championship and three straight regular season championships from 2007-2009 as well as six NCAA Regional Tournament berths in the last 10 years.

Under Vigness, the Bluejay softball team was the winningest team in the Missouri Valley Conference over their last ten seasons in the conference. The Bluejays are tied for most consecutive conference tournament championships with three. In 2010, the Bluejays again broke records in team and individual homeruns (season), and individual RBI, runs, total bases, walks, HBP, and sacs as well as pitching records (season and career) in wins, strike outs, appearances, starts, complete games and innings.

Abby Johnson
Assistant Coach

Abby Johnson, an Omaha native, is in her ninth year as an assistant coach after a prolific career as a Bluejay. Johnson was a four-year starter at pitcher, first base and designated hitter receiving All-MVC honors each year, and was named to the MVC All-Centennial Team in 2007. The 2004 Women’s Major All-American and 2005 MVC Player of the Year is found in numerous offensive and pitching categories in the CU record books. She works primarily with pitchers, catchers, and outfielders.
 
Renae Sinkler
Assistant Coach

Renae Sinkler is in her second year as an assistant coach. She served as the volunteer assistant coach in 2011 after a record-setting career as a Bluejay, playing from 2007-2010. Throughout her career, Renae started at first base, left field, shortstop, and designated hitter. This two-time MVC Player of the Year and three-time All-MVC selection earned Third Team All-American honors in 2010 and was named National Player of the Week on April14, 2008. She also owns the Creighton single-season record in home runs, RBI, total bases and runs scored. Renae works primarily with outfielders.


18th Annual Softball Team Camp
July 21-24, 2014

 

Camp Overview

1.  Your team will play at least six regularly scheduled games.

2.  All games will be played with a 1 hour and 15 minute time limit or 7 innings, whichever comes first.

3.  Each game will have A.S.A. sanctioned umpires.

4.  Sessions will begin at 8:30 a.m. every day. The complete schedule will be given to the coach at the pre-camp meeting.

5.  You will have the opportunity to evaluate all of your players in game situations in a relaxed environment.

6.  Each high school may only bring one squad.

7.  An All-Star game will conclude in the evening of the last day. The players are nominated by their coaches.

Enrollment

Each coach must first call and reserve a spot in the camp for your team. To ensure that all of your players are eligible to participate in the team camp, coaches are required to collect your players’ applications and send them in together. Please contact Coach Vigness via email to guarantee your team a spot in the 2014 Bluejay Softball Team Camp. Check-in will take place at the mandatory coaches meeting on July 20. Checks should be made out to Creighton Softball Camp. All applications and registration forms should be collected by the high school coach or representative and turned in together at the Coaches Meeting on July 20.

General Information


ELIGIBILITY:
Each team must be accompanied by an adult serving as a coach. If you do not have an adult to act as coach, one of the CU players will be available to coach. If you do have a coach or another parent to serve as coach, a CU player will be available to assist if you would like it. Each team must be composed of at least 10 players. 

CHECK-IN: Check-in will take place at the coaches meeting on July 20 held in the Kitty Gaughan Pavilion at 6:00 pm on Creighton’s campus. At this time, final payment and all registration forms are due. You need to give your completed form to your coach and he or she will turn them in together on July 20.

HEALTH CARE: All campers must carry their own insurance. Bluejay Softball Camp and Creighton University cannot be responsible for injuries sustained at camp. All campers must have a signed parental consent form on file in order to participate in camp. This rule will be strictly enforced.

*Per NCAA regulations, Creighton softball camps are open to any and all entrants, and are limited only by number, age, grade level, and/or gender.
