LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Creighton women's basketball team dropped a 56-52 contest to Clemson in the second day of action at the 'Duel in the Desert' Tournament on Friday, Dec. 20.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 5-6 on the season, while Clemson moved to 7-4 overall.
Tied at 6-6 with 17:00 remaining in the first half, Creighton was hit with an 8-0 Clemson run to drop back 14-6 at the 15:01 mark.
The deficit grew to as much as 12 points (25-13) with just over seven minutes remaining in the half. Creighton responded with an 11-2 run over the next 5:30, ignited by a three-pointer from freshman Lauren Works. Sophomore Marissa Janning added in two free throws, then freshman Brianna Rollerson scored six points in the post to make it a one possession game at 27-24 with 1:30 showing on the scoreboard.
Clemson, however, knocked in the final bucket of the half to send the teams to the locker room with Creighton down 29-24.
Each team traded punches through the opening 15 minutes of the second period, with Creighton closing to within three points three times. Clemson held a 53-45 bulge with 2:31 left to play.
With their collective backs to the wall, Creighton mounted a furious charge as senior Sarah Nelson drilled a three-ball from the left wing, then Janning stole the inbounds pass and fed senior Jordan Garrison for a layup to make it 53-50 with 2:04 remaining.
Following two free throws by Clemson, Janning countered with two free throws of her own to make it 55-52 with 1:32 left.
The Bluejays, however, were unable to get over the hump down the stretch, missing two free throws and two field goals in the final 90 seconds.
Nelson led Creighton with 11 points, while Rollerson added 10 points off the bench.
The Tigers were led by a game-high 22 points from Quinyotta Pettaway and 11 from Charmaine Tay.
The Bluejays will close out play in the 'Duel in the Desert' Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 21 as Creighton faces the tournament host, UNLV, at 9:30 pm (CT).
