OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Volleyball's Lauren Smith has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after hitting .406 and helping the Bluejays to three wins last week. Smith etched her name in the Creighton record book twice during a 3-1 week that saw the redshirt freshman average 2.50 kills and 1.44 blocks per set.
The Lincoln native opened her week with 10 kills and nine blocks on .316 hitting in a 3-1 win vs. Kansas. Smith’s 10 kills were a career-high (at the time) and her nine blocks tied the CU record for blocks by a freshman in one match.
Smith then had 10 kills in 11 swings to go with five blocks as CU swept previously unbeaten Cal State Northridge on Friday. Her .909 hitting percentage ranks as the top hitting percentage in Creighton history for any player with at least 10 attempts in a match.
Smith had a career-high with 13 kills on .346 hitting in a 3-2 win at Denver on Friday evening, adding five blocks.
On Saturday, Smith had seven kills and four blocks in a match vs. No. 11 UCLA.
The No. 23-ranked Bluejays play their final non-conference matches of the season this weekend at the Shocker Volleyball Classic in Wichita, Kan. The Bluejays will meet No. 7 Hawai'i on Friday at 5 pm, South Dakota on Saturday at 5 pm and Wichita State on Sunday at 2 pm.
