Sports Info Office Takes Top Honors at MVC Meetings
ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The Creighton University Sports Information Office was named the best in the Missouri Valley Conference at meetings last week in St. Louis. The award, selected by Valley associate commissioner Mike Kern, is in its fourth year.
Kern cited Creighton's work while hosting MVC Championship events in men's soccer, men's & women's tennis and women's golf in the last academic year. In March, Creighton and the MVC co-hosted the NCAA First- and Second-Round Men's Basketball Championship at Qwest Center Omaha to rave reviews from the media.
"Creighton's sports information staff continues to prove that you don't need a big staff to provide great media service," said Kern. "The Bluejays were involved in hosting more MVC championships than any other school last year and were deeply entrenched in the NCAA Men's Basketball 1st/2nd Round and College World Series. The Creighton SID staff didn't miss a beat. And didn't sleep much. The award is well deserved."
Creighton's 2007-08 sports information office staff consisted of Sports Information Director Rob Anderson, Associate Sports Information Director Rob Simms and intern Brent Elsasser. Steven Henneberry and Daniel O'Byrne served as student sport contacts, while fellow students Peter Della Penna, Joe Cowan, Philip Cerepak and Michael Manning also worked in the office. The staff also relies heavily on a core group of 10-20 volunteers who staff numerous home events throughout the season.
Illinois State's office had won the three previous awards, while Missouri State claimed the first trophy in 2004.
