OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton women's tennis team put up a valiant effort, playing a three and a half hour match in the opening round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, but fell 4-0 to Illinois State. The season-ending loss finishes the Bluejays season at 11-10.
In a race to the first to four, Illinois State picked up the crucial doubles point. Aniko Kiss and Emmie Marx downed Jennie Hartjes and Analese Snyder 8-0 at the No. 1 doubles spot before the No. 3 team of Stefanie Youngberg and Hannah Esker ousted Elizabeth Vermillion and Amanda Noonan 8-6 to take the 1-0 lead.
Emmie Marx then started off doubles play by defeating Kelsey Schmidt 7-6 (7-3 in tie-break), 6-3 at the No. 2 singles. ISU went up 3-0 when Phyllis Tigges downed Analese Snyder 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 3 singles.
To clinch the win and get to the 4-0 win, Aniko Kiss defeated Jennie Hartjes 4-6, 6-3, 603 in the No. 1 singles.
No. 3 Illinois State advances to play No. 2 Drake tomorrow morning at 10:00 am. No. 1 Wichita State advanced to the second round and will play No. 4 Southern Illinois, also at 10:00 am. Both matches are set to be at Koch Family Tennis Center.
NOTES: Mary McMullan and Kelsey Schmidt were knotted 7-7 with Phyllis Tigges and Ariane Maack at the No. 2 doubles before they were stopped ... McMullan was split 5-7, 6-4, 1-1 against Carolina Abello at the No. 4 singles, Elizabeth Vermillion and Stefanie Youngberg were at 1-6, 1-1 in the No. 5 singles and Taylor Koehrsen and Hannah Esker had the same 1-6, 1-1 score in the No. 6 singles when the match was finished.
