OMAHA, Neb. - Creighton senior tennis players Kelsey Schmidt and Mary McMullan became the first women's tennis duo in Bluejay history to pick up Missouri Conference all-conference honors, announced at the pre-tournament banquet on Thursday night. Schmidt and McMullan were named the All-Missouri Valley Conference No. 2 doubles team, marking the best team at the No. 2 spot this season.
The duo holds a 16-6 overall record in doubles play this season, competing primarily at the No. 2 position. They finished conference play with a 5-1 mark, winning the first five matches straight in Valley play. They lead the team with a 12-4 mark this spring,just one of two teams who have double-digit wins this spring.
Schmidt, (a Brookfield, Wis. native) and McMullan (from Boone, Iowa) currently sit at No. 2 and No. 3 on the Creighton all-time career win charts, with 139 and 131 wins total, respectively. Schmidt has the most wins in doubles play in Creighton history, while McMullan sits #2 in all-time singles wins list.
The senior tandem leads the Creighton women's tennis team into play this weekend at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. The Bluejays earned the No. 6 seed, finishing with an 11-9 overall record, 2-5 in the Valley. They will take on No. 3 Illinois State (11-11, 5-2) at noon.
Friday's play has been moved indoors to Hanscom Indoor Tennis Center.
