Women's Tennis Falls 6-1 at Illinois State
NORMAL, Ill. - The Creighton women's tennis team got another strong performance from senior Mary McMullan, who won both her No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles, but it wouldn't be enough as Illinois State defeated the Bluejays 6-1 on Sunday.
The loss drops Creighton to 10-8, 1-4 in Valley play, while Illinois State improves to 9-11, 3-2 in the MVC.
McMullan won all four of her matches on the weekend, also winning both matches yesterday. She and Kelsey Schmidt teamed up to win their fifth straight match at No. 2 doubles, defeating Phyllis Tigges and Ariane Maack 8-3 and tying a season-long win streak. The duo is 15-3 this season at the No. 2 doubles spot.
Illinois State claimed both of the other doubles spots, picking up the automatic point heading into singles play. Aniko Kiss and Emmie Marx defeated Jennie Hartjes and Analese Snyder 8-3 in the No. 1 doubles and Hannah Esker and Stefanie Youngberg downed Elizabeth Vermillion and Amanda Noonan 8-4 in the No. 3 doubles.
McMullan was the lone Bluejay to pick up a win in singles play, defeating Carolina Abello in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 4 singles spot. She has now won the No. 4 spot in nine of the last 10 matches for the Jays.
Kiss defeated Hartjes in the No. 1 singles after they split the first two sets, finishing with a7-5, 3-6, 6-3 win. Marx downed Schmidt 6-1m 6-2 at the No. 2 singles, followed by Tigges winning No. 3 singles 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Youngberg defeated Vermillion in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, before Hannah Esker defeated Taylor Koehrsen 8-3 in the No. 6 singles.
The Jays close out regular season play next weekend, hosting Northern Iowa on Saturday and Drake on Sunday.
