ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The
Creighton Bluejays finished last week a combined 7-1 in play in
Florida, led by Kelsey Schmidt and Billy Paluch, who have been honored
as the MVC Player of the Week in women's and men's tennis, respectively.
Kelsey
Schmidt helped lead the Bluejays to four wins and an undefeated Spring
Break trip in Orlando last week. The senior went unscathed
in individual play during the week as well, finishing 4-0 at the No. 2
singles and 4-0 teaming up with Mary McMullan at the No. 2 doubles.
Schmidt won each of her singles matches in straight sets, allowing just
one opponent to win more than four games.
Schmidt
sits at 8-4 this spring, playing both No. 2 and No. 3 singles for the
Jays. She has 11 wins overall in singles play this year and has won
seven of her last 10 matches. In doubles play, Schmidt and McMullan
lead the team with 10 combined doubles wins this
year, holding a 6-2 mark this spring. Schmidt remains at #2 in career
wins with a total of 128. She also now has the most doubles wins in
school history with 67 and is #7 with 61 singles.
Billy
Paluch led the Bluejays to three wins over the last week, competing at
the No. 1 spot in both singles and doubles play and going
undefeated, a perfect combined 8-0 mark on the week. The junior won all
four of his singles matches in straight sets, holding down the top spot
in singles play. He also teamed up with J.T. Christian to win all four
doubles matches at No. 1 doubles.
Paluch
is tied for the lead on the team with 12 wins overall on the year,
winning his last five straight and holding a 7-2 mark this spring. He
has combined with Christian to post a 7-2 mark at the No. 1 doubles, the
most wins by any duo this spring. Through his first three seasons, Paluch sits in seventh in career doubles wins with 50.
The Bluejays will be
in action this weekend when they host Northern Colorado. The women's
match is set for Saturday, March 17, at 1:30 p.m., while the men's team
is set for a first serve on Sunday, March 18, at 11:30 a.m.
