OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton women's tennis team opened up Missouri Valley Conference play on Sunday, hosting Wichita State at the Hanscom Indoor Tennis Center. The Bluejays won one-of-three at doubles, but were swept the rest of the way, falling 7-0 to the Shockers.
The Shockers opened up doubles play with Veronika Blaskova and Valerie Brockman defeating Taylor Koehrsen and Analese Snyder 8-2 at the No. 3 spot. WSU then earned the doubles point when Lutfiana Budiharto and Carla Venticinque defeated Jennie Hartjes and Kelsey Schmidt, 8-7 at the No. 1 spot. Creighton won the No. 2 doubles, when Elizabeth Vermillion and Mary McMullan pulled out a close 8-7 win over Montse Blasco Fernandez and Delia Damaschin.
Singles play belonged to the Shockers, winning every spot in straight sets. Budiharto started things off by defeating Hartjes 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 1 spot, followed by Blaskova downing Schmidt 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3.
Damaschin then defeated Snyder 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, before Satjaporn Mahajaroen defeated McMullan 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 4 singles. Venticinque defeated Vermillion 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and Blasco Fernandez defeated Koehrsen 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot.
The Bluejays will be in action next when they travel to Orlando, Florida, as part of the annual Spring Break trip. Both the men's and women's teams will be in action the first full week of March.
