Women’s Tennis Extends Win Streak to Four with Pair of Wins

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Creighton women’s tennis team swept both of its matches Tuesday, edging Quinnipiac 4-3 before blanking St. Ambrose 7-0 at Oak Street Park in Kissimmee, Fla.

Creighton (6-6) earned its fourth straight win with the pair of victories.  CU junior Jennie Hartjes clinched the team match point against Quinnipiac (2-7) in the last match of the day on court one. The Jays swept both doubles and singles matches against St. Ambrose (1-8) in the nightcap.

After dropping the doubles point in match one Creighton claimed four the six singles matches winning at Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 6. Hartjes and freshman Katherine Nelsen won at No. 1 doubles 8-3 but the Bobcats earned a pair of 8-4 wins on courts two and three to take the point.

Junior Liz Vermillion even the match at 1-1 after a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles. Senior Analese Snyder gave CU a 2-1 lead with a 6-1, 6-3 victory on court two. Nelsen made it a 3-1 advantage for the Jays after a 6-3, 6-1 outing. QU then even the match at 3-3 with wins on courts four and five. Hartjes came through at the No. 1 spot with a tight 7-6(2), 7-6 (5) victory to secure the team victory at 4-3.

In match two, the Bluejays swept the doubles point with 8-0 victories on courts one and three to give CU a 1-0 lead.

All six Bluejays dominated in straight sets. No Creighton player surrendered more than one total game in a match.

Creighton juniors Amanda Noonan and Liz Vermillion posted wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively, each surrendering just one game. CU sophomore Karlin Naslund blanked her opponent on court five while freshman Simone Hussussian won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Hartjes and Snyder also claimed straight set wins.

Creighton will stay in Florida this week and will face Wesleyan on Thursday.
