Men's Tennis Blanks Hastings 7-0

OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton men's tennis team blanked Hastings College 7-0 at the Koch Family Tennis Center Tuesday night.

Creighton (7-5) swept the doubles point before winning at each singles position against Hastings (1-7). It marked the first time this season that the Bluejays scored more than five points in a match and is the first sweep by the CU men since a 7-0 win over Nebraska Omaha last April 12.

With the win the Bluejays improved to 5-1 at home. Creighton also remained undefeated at 6-0 this season when claiming the doubles point.

CU senior Sean Mathison and freshman Brandon Lee claimed the first win of the day at No. 2 doubles after an 8-3 decision over Hastings’ Kolby Matheny and Leland Dexter. Bluejay freshman Sam Wells made his debut for Creighton on doubles court three with classmate August Nysted. The CU duo doubled up the Bronco pairing of Joe Ritzdorf and Isaac Mertens 8-4 to claim the point.

Freshman Nick Thompson and senior Ryan Norman claimed the final doubles victory by dispatching McKay Inman and Seton Bachle by a score of 8-5 at the top spot.

CU freshman Jack Fay also made his debut on the court for the Jays at the No. 6 singles slot. Fay made good on his debut with a double-bagel win over Joe Bliven 6-0, 6-0. Classmate Anthony Rauschenbach made a winning debut at the No. 5 position for Creighton with a straight-set 6-1, 6-2 victory over Ritzdorf.

Creighton freshman Quinn Dippel gave up just one game to Dexter in a 6-1, 6-0, defeat to claim the team match point and earn his first career win at the No. 3 singles position. On court two, Norman rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Bachle.

Mathison claimed his first career win at the top singles spot after a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Inman. Lee was the final Bluejay off the court with a three-set victory against Mertens.  Lee won the first set 6-4 before dropping the second by the same score. In the third set superbreaker Lee claimed a 10-3 set win for the victory.

Creighton returns to Missouri Valley Conference action when it travels to Wichita State on Friday for a 1 p.m. CT match.
