Men's Tennis Sends Two To Finals At Drake Fall Invite

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Creighton men's tennis team will send two men to the finals in singles play in the Drake Fall Invitational, as both Billy Paluch and Quinn Dippel went 2-0 on Saturday in Des Moines.

Paluch, who earned All-MVC accolades last spring, went 2-0 in Flight A singles and will face Drake's Ben Mullis for the title. Paluch beat Gustavus Adolphus' Amrik Donkena 6-1, 6-0, then downed Drake's Alen Salibasic 7-6 (5), 6-1.

Dippel's success came in Flight D, where the freshman from Lindsborg, Kan., beat Iowa's Alejandro Rios 6-4, 6-3 and Gustavus Adolophus' Tyler Johnson, 6-4, 7-5. Dippel will look to close out his first college tournament in a title match versus Northern Illinois' Simon Formont.

"It was great to see Billy and Quinn reach the finals," said CU head coach Tom Lilly. "We let a few matches slip away that we could have won, so we need to get better at capitalizing on those opportunities. I hope to see some good results and effort tomorrow morning."

Elsewhere in Flight D, Creighton's Sean Mathison lost to Formont 6-2, 6-3 before rebounding to beat Gustavus Adolophus' Motasam Al-Houni by a 6-2, 6-3 score. Mathison will play for fifth-place against Rios tomorrow.

In Flight B, Creighton's Ryan Norman defeated Gustavus Adolophus' Joey MacGibbon in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5. Norman then lost to Drake's Ben Lott 6-3, 6-1 and will face Iowa's Joey White for third place.

In Flight E, Creighton's Elliot Baker beat North Dakota's David Bergstrom, 6-1, 6-0, only to then fall to NIU's Jovan Zeljkovic by a 6-3, 6-4 count. Baker will play for third place against Gustavus Adolphus' Marcel Gyswyt. Also in Flight E, August Nysted lost 6-1, 6-1 to Drake's Ryan Drake before rallying to upend Northern Colorado's Ryan Lane, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Nysted will play for fifth place on Sunday against Logan Peterson from Gustavus Adolphus.

In Flight F, Nick Thompson went 1-1 while Anthony Rauschenbach was 0-2. Thompson lost to Bryan Miles from Gustavus Adolphus 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 but would follow that with a win over UND's Jared Vigen, 6-1, 6-3. Rauschenbach fell in straight sets to Drake's James McKie (6-0, 6-2), then lost to Gustavus Adolphus' Mitch Elorson 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Also in Flight C, Jays freshman Brandon Lee lost to NIU's Axel Lagerlof 6-4, 6-2 as well as Gustavus Adolphus' Brad Entwistle, 6-0, 6-7 (3), 6-3. Lee will play for seventh place against Gustavus Adolphus' Grant Leisner when the Drake Fall Invitational concludes on Sunday.
