OMAHA, Neb. - Rain pushed the Creighton men's tennis team indoors on Saturday for the second straight match, this time the Bluejays fell to Southern Illinois 6-1. The loss drops Creighton to 9-8 on the season, 0-4 in MVC play, while SIU improves to 7-11, 1-1 in conference play.
Kyle Obermeier and Billy Paluch won the No. 1 doubles match, defeateing Stanislas Rodier and Brandon Florez 8-3 to start the day, followed by SIU's Badr Cherradi and Jordan Snyder defeating J.T. Christian and Elliott Baker 8-6 at No. 3 doubles. The automatic doubles point came down to the No. 2 spot, where SIU's Orhan Spahic and Syzmon Opieczonek outsted Ryan Norman and Sean Mathison 9-8 to earn the point.
Singles play belonged mainly to the Salukis, who won five of the six matches in singles play. Gabe Nagy came away with the lone win for the Jays, dowing Opieczonek 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 6 singles.
Paluch fell to Cherradi 76, 6-3, 10-1 in the No 1 singles, followed by Rodier defeating Christian 7-5, 7-6 in the No. 2 singles. Florez defeated Obermeier 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 3 singles followed by Spahic dowing Mathison 7-6, 6-4 at the No. 4 singles. Rafael Cuadrillero closed out play with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Norman at the No. 5 singles.
The Bluejays wrap up regular-season play hosting Wichita State on Sunday, April 22. Creighton will then host the Missouri Valley Conference team tournament, April 27-29.
