CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Creighton men's tennis team fell in their final regular season tennis match on Saturday, dropping a 6-1 decision to Southern Illinois. The Bluejays drop to 7-9 on the season and 0-5 in the MVC heading into the MVC Team Championships at the end of the month.
The first match to finish in the five hour and 20 minute match was the No. 1 doubles, where Adam Fabik and Brandon Florez of SIU defeated Billy Paluch and J.T. Christian 8-6. The other two doubles matches followed suit with the 8-6 score, as Gabe Nagy and Ryan Norman earned the win at No. 3 doubles in the next finisher, defeating Orhan Spahic and Jordan Snyder 8-6. To earn the doubles point, SIU's Jorge Cavero and Carlos Do Val defeated Kyle Obermeier and Sean Mathison 8-6 in the No. 2 doubles.
Singles play saw just one Bluejay victory and just two matches going to three sets. Cavero defeated Christian 6-3, 6-3 to put the Saluki's the 2-0 lead. Fabik then defeated Paluch in three sets, coming back after losing the first set to defeat Paluch 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
To give the Saluki's the win, Florez defeated Obermeier 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-2. It was the second match the Jays won the first set but then fell in the next two, which also put the Saluki's up 4-0 and gave them the automatic win. Finishing fourth was Do Val at No. 4 singles, defeating Bryan Lube 6-4, 6-3.
To close out the day, Ryan Norman picked up the only Bluejay point, defeating Rafael Cuadrillero 8-3. SIU picked up the sixth point when Spahic defeated Nagy 7-5, 7-6 (7-1).
