DES MOINES, Iowa - On day two of the MVC Tennis Individual Championships, Creighton's doubles teams took center court to show what they could do. The men's singles consolation and first round of tournament play also took place.
In Flight 1 doubles action, Billy Paluch and J.T. Christian lost the opening match to Mihai/Marinescu of Wichita State but came back to defeat Weerasinghe/Nguyen of Bradley to claim the second seed in the championship brackets. They will face Pelaez/Reichelt of Illinois State tomorrow in the final round of play.
In Flight 2 doubles, Sean Mathison and Kyle Obermeier fell in two matches that went down to the wire, losing to Nicol/Stiebinger of Wichita State 9-4 (8), and then to Kalhorn/Abrams of Bradley 9-8 (6). They will not play in bracket play tomorrow.
Finally, Gabe Nagy and Ryan Norman fell early to Cavalcanti/Periera of Wichita State 8-3 but came back and defeated Do Val/Snyder of Southern Illinois, also by a score of 8-3. The Creighton duo will take on Miljevic/Smith-Dennis of Illinois State tomorrow.
Also played today were consolation and semifinal singles matches. In the only semifinal match of the day, Gabe Nagy lost in Flight 5 singles to Tuomas Manner of Illinois State 6-4, 6-1. In Flight 1 singles, Billy Paluch defeated Vlad Marinescu 7-6 (5), 3-6 (4) to win the consolation bracket. Also playing in a consolation bracket, J.T. Christian fell in the Flight 2 singles 6-7, 7-6 (1) to Hamish Weerasinghe of Bradley. Christian finished second in the consolation bracket.
In the Flight 3 singles, Creighton's Kyle Obermeier won the consolation round, taking two from Eric Nguyen of Bradley 6-4, 4-1. Bryan Lube couldn't come out with a win in the Flight 4 consolation bracket, falling to Ashton Kalhorn of Bradley 4-6, 6-3 (7). He finished in second in his flight of the consolation bracket. Also winning the consolation bracket was Ryan Norman, coming out victorious 6-0, 6-3 in the Flight 6 singles.
In the final singles matches of the day, Lorenz Laurel defeated Derm Manning of Bradley 6-3, 6-0, while Sean Mathison defeated Jordan Snyder 7-6 (2), 4-6 (9) in the Flight 7 consolation matches.
