OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton men's tennis team's first home match in nearly a month will have to be played indoors today, as the threat for rain will force the match against Nebraska Omaha inside the Hanscom Indoor Tennis Center. The two teams will start with doubles play at 1:00 pm, followed by singles play at Hanscom, located just west of I-480 at the Martha Street Exit.
Last Match for the Jays...
The Creighton men’s tennis team dropped its second straight match on Saturday, April 7, falling 5-2 at Bradley. The Jays drop to 8-7 on the season, 0-3 in MVC play, while the Braves improve to 10-12, 1-1 in conference play.
“Our team came out strong and played some solid doubles,” said head coach Tom Lilly. “I was very pleased to sweep the doubles against a good team like Bradley but we must improve our singles play, as well as our focus and desire to win in singles.”
Creighton swept through doubles play, winning all three spots to earn the automatic point going into singles. Billy Paluch and Kyle Obermeier defeated Juan Diego Cuadrado and Justin Abrams 8-4 in the No. 1 doubles, followed by Ryan Norman and Sean Mathison defeating Ahmed Albitar and Hamish Weerasinghe 8-5 at the No. 2 doubles.
Paluch was the lone singles player to win their spot for the Bluejays, as the junior defeated Albitar 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 postiion. The Braves swept through the rest of play, with the No. 3 singles the lone spot to go to three sets. Christian and Ashton Kalhorn split the first two sets in No. 3 singles, but Kalhorn broke serve to win 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Weerasinghe defeated Obermeier 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 2 singles and Juan Diego Cuadrado defeated Sean Mathison 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 4 singes. To close out play, Arthur Romanet defeated Baker 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 5 singles and Justin Abrams downed Gabe Nagy 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
“Billy continues to play very well and that is great to have at the top position. JT just lost by a break of serve in the third set, but also fought very hard. Credit goes to Bradley because they were the better team today.”
Good to be Home...
The Creighton men’s tennis team is playing its first home match in nearly a month on Thursday afternoon. Creighton’s last home match was March 18, when the Jays hosted Northern Colorado. They have played five straight matches on the road, but will now close out the season with home matches against Southern Illinois (Saturday, April 14) and Wichita State (Sunday, April 22). The men’s and women’s tennis teams will then host the Missouri Valley Conference Tennis Team Championships April 27-29.
A look at the Mavericks...
In their first year as a Division I program, the Nebraska Omaha men’s tennis team is off to a 4-8 start (prior to ther Wednesday afternoon match against Concordia), with wins over Nebraska Wesleyan, Hastings, Emporia State and Colorado Christian.
The Mavericks are coached by Mike Saniuk, who like Creighton’s head coach Tom Lilly, does double-duty as both the men’s and women’s tennis head coach.He is in his second season as the head coach of Maverick tennis.
