-- The Creighton women's golf team currently sits in 10th place after round one of the Creighton Classic. Creighton’s 343 puts it only three shots behind Concordia-St. Paul for ninth place, and 32 shots behind defending champion Northern Iowa on a blustery day that included temperatures in the high 30's, high winds, and occasional flurries.
Individually, three-time defending champion Amy Anderson of North Dakota State leads the field after an opening round score of 74. Northern Iowa’s Sarah Boss and Bellevue’s Maria Saavedra are tied for second with a 76. Saavedra had a hole-in-one on the par-3, 12th hole on Monday, using a five wood from 165 yards for the ace.
Northern Iowa (311) currently holds a four stroke lead over North Dakota State (315) and Western Illinois (316) sits in third place.
The Jays currently have four golfers in the top 50 of the 74-woman field. Senior Celeste Gassman
led the team after shooting an 84 and finishing tied for 30th. Sophomore Rachel Thompson
tied for 36th with an 85 and freshman Grace Yowell
is one shot behind Thompson and currently sits tied for 41st. Mary Cathryn Rau
shot an 88 and is tied for 49th, while Katie Morel
fired a 91 and is tied for 61st. Playing as individuals and not counting toward CU's team score are Emily Allison
(66th, 94), Shauna Hill
(70th, 96) and Madeline Albers (71st, 97).
Round two play begin tomorrow at 10:30am at the Oak Hills Country Club (12325 Golfing Green Drive).
