Women's Golf 24th at Wyoming Cowgirl Classic

CHANDLER, Ariz. -- The Creighton women's golf team finished 24th at the Cowgirl Classic on Wednesday. The three-day tournament took place at the par-72 6,184 yard Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Ariz. The 24-team, 128-golfer field included Iowa, Colorado State, South Dakota State, Wichita State and host school Wyoming.

The Jays finished with a team score of 343-322-334=999. Iowa won the team competition with an 884. Colorado State (890) finished in second place and Portland State (901) came in third.

Brianna Espinoza of Colorado State finished first overall with a 208. Kristi Cardwell (213) of Iowa and Julie Shutler (217) of Sacramento State finished second and third respectively.

For the Jays, Celeste Gassman was the top golfer. The junior finished tied for 39th with a score of 76-76-77=229. Freshman Rachel Thompson was the second best in the Jays clubhouse. She finished tied for 99th after rounds of 83-76-85=244. Junior Jill Stuckenschneider gradually improved throughout the tournament. She knocked off 12 shots from her first round score of 94 to her third round score of 82 to finish with a 261 total and a 121st place finish.

Freshmen Katie Morel 94-85-90=269 and Mary Cathryn Rau 90-95-92=277 finished 123rd and 124th respectively.

The Jays are in action on April 16-17 when they host the Creighton Classic at the Oak Hills Country Club.
