Women's Golf Finishes Ninth at MVC Championship
Release: 04/23/2011

NORMAL, Ill. -- The Creighton women's golf team finished ninth at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship on Saturday in Normal, Ill. The event, which was originally scheduled as a two-day championship -- 36 holes Friday followed by 18 holes on Saturday -- was shortened to only 36 holes after rain prevented any action on Friday. The Jays shot rounds of 332 and 331 to finish with a team total of 663. Host Illinois State won the team title for the fourth consecutive year, an MVC women's golf record.

The Jays were led for the first time this spring by sophomore Celeste Gassman, who finished in a tie for 27th place. She carded rounds of 79 and 82 at the par-71, 5,943-yard Weibring Golf Club to finish with a 19-over-par total of 161.

Senior Maggie Kersenbrock was Creighton's next-best finisher. She wrapped up her final collegiate season with back-to-back rounds of 82, good for a tie for 35th. Creighton sophomore Jill Stuckenschneider and seniors Ashley Norris and Maggy Hejlek all finished within three strokes of each other to round out the Jays' team scoring. Stuckenschneider fired off rounds of 85 and 83 to finish tied for 41st; Norris used rounds of 86 and 84 to finish in a tie for 45th; and Hejlek finished in 47th after rounds of 87 and 84.

The event's individual champion was Brianna Cooper of Illinois State, who shot a 144, and all five Redbirds finished in the top 18.
