Creighton Earns 2008-09 MVC All-Academic Award
Release: 10/26/2009
Darin Ruf earned Academic All-America honors last season, helping CU to the MVC's All-Academic Award once again.

For the fifth time in the seven-year existence of the award, Creighton University has been recognized with the Missouri Valley Conference All-Academic Award.  Bluejay student-athletes posted a 3.32 cumulative grade-point average over the 2008-09 academic calendar, tying the school's best mark ever.  Creighton previously shared the award in 2003-04, and were the outright winners in 2004-05 and 2006-07 and 2007-08.

Fourteen student-athletes (6.2 percent of all student-athletes) posted perfect 4.00 grade-point averages during the 2009 spring semester and 38.5 percent of CU's 226 student-athletes earned a 3.50 GPA or better during the same term.  Better than 75 percent of all Creighton athletes earned GPAs of 3.0 or better last spring.

Nine Creighton teams in Valley sponsored sports - women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, women's golf, women's soccer, softball, men's and women's tennis and volleyball - posted grade-point averages over 3.20, while every Bluejay team owned a cumulative GPA of 2.79 or better.

Creighton had 120 student-athletes make the Dean's List at least once last year, including 68 student-athletes that earned the honor both semesters.  Creighton had a Valley-best seven teams ranked among the nation's top 10 percent in the NCAA's Academic Progress Report, posting multi-year scores ranking with the country's best in women's basketball, women's cross country, men's and women's golf, women's soccer, men's tennis and volleyball.  Creighton ranks first among Valley schools and 23rd nationally with a 94 percent graduation success rate for all student-athletes.

Creighton owns 30 all-time CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.  Last season, softball standout Tara Oltman and baseball first baseman Darin Ruf were named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans.

Creighton claimed 18 Prairie Farms/MVC Scholar-Athletes of the Week, 13 MVC Scholar-Athlete first-team honors, five CoSIDA Academic All-District awards, one MVC President's Council Academic Award (3.8+ GPA, within 18 hours of graduation) and 38 MVC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Awards (3.5+ GPA, sophomore in academic standing).

The MVC All-Academic Award was first recommended by the league faculty representatives in hopes of recognizing institutional academic excellence.  The MVC Joint Committee quickly took its lead to establish this prestigious award.

The conference academic excellence award is based on the average student-athlete grade-point average for the academic year.  The GPA calculations are tallied for all student-athletes in MVC-sponsored sports who compete, practice or receive athletic aid during the academic year.
