SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. -- The Creighton men's golf team certainly saved its best for last.
Picked by the league's coaches to finish eighth, the Jays placed fourth in the season-ending State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship in Sunrise Beach, Mo., on Tuesday. It was Creighton's second-best finish since 1949, trailing only the 2007 team's third-place finish.
The Jays, battling wet and rainy conditions, put together rounds of 312, 308 and 312 to finish with a 932 total in the three-round, two-day event at The Club at Porto Cima. Wichita State won the team title for the fourth consecutive year.
Juniors Austin Miller and Kevin Stanek both tied for seventh place to lead Creighton on the par-72, 7,036-yard layout. Miller, who finished 33 strokes over par at the 2010 MVC Championship, got better each round in 2011. He carded rounds of 78, 76 and 75, a 13-over-par 229 total. Stanek, a junior college transfer competing in his first MVC Championship, recorded Creighton's best round of the event, a second-round 74, and he sandwiched that with a 78 and 77.
Creighton sophomore John Rasmussen wasn't far behind his seventh-place teammates. Already with a top-ten MVC finish under his belt -- he finished seventh at least year's event -- Rasmussen fired rounds of 77, 79 and 76, good for a tie for 16th place.
Junior Ben Lowman came next for the Jays. He used rounds of 79, 79 and 87 to finish in a tie for 37th, and junior Jack Dressen wrapped up Creighton's scoring with rounds of 86, 80 and 84, good for a tie for 41st place.
