Men's Golf Signs Local Golfer
OMAHA, Neb. - Creighton head men's golf coach Chris Wiemers has announced the recent signing of Fremont Bergan senior Johnny Spellerberg. The standout signed his national letter of intent in the fall signing period and will join the men's golf team for the 2011-2012 season as a freshman.
"John is a tremendous golfer and an even more outstanding person and student," said Wiemers. "We plan on him helping out our depth immediately. He has a great short game to go along with a ton of tournament experience. We are pleased to have him!"
Spellerberg participated in nearly 25 tournaments this past summer and was named the Nebraska Junior Golfer of the Year by the Nebraska Golf Association. He won the Nebraska Junior Match Play Championship, finished fifth at the Nebraska Junior Amateur Championship, second at the Nebraska Junior PGA Championship and was named a member of the NGA's junior cup squad and captain of the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour's annual All-Star Team; and that was just this summer.
Spellerberg has also excelled at the high school level, playing for head coach Chris Rainforth at Bergan. As a junior he finished third in the Class C Nebraska State Meet and won the individual Class D title as a sophomore.
The men's golf team will be in action this spring, but tournament dates are yet to be released. Check www.gocreighton.com for all the latest schedules and results.
