NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. -- The Creighton men’s golf team finished eighth at the Fairway Club Invitational on Tuesday. The par-72, 7158-yard ArborLinks Golf Course played host to the two-day event. The 12-team field included Missouri Valley counterparts Drake, Missouri State, Illinois State and host school Nebraska.
The Jays finished with a combined score of 318-308-307=933. Nebraska won the team event with a score of 899 (306-292-301). Illinois State (297-307-296=900) came in second and Oral Roberts (303-300-299=902) finished third.
Individually, Illinois State’s Ricky Hearden (75-72-72=219) took first place after beating out Nebraska’s Kevin Gillick (77-69-73=219) in a playoff. Oral Roberts’ Shannon Allen finished third with a 220 (69-72-79).
Ben Lowman was the top golfer for the Jays. The senior finished tied for 23rd with a 231 (78-77-76). Sophomore Johnny Spellerberg finished tied for 27th with a 232 (78-76-78). Junior Daniel McKernan’s 235 was good for a tie for 42nd. Juniors Collin Craft finished tied for 48th with a 237 and Trey Turley shot a 246 and finished 68th.
Jack Stimple competed as an individual. He finished tied for 69th shooting an 86-82-79=247.
The Jays are back in action on Sept. 26 at the Omaha Country Club with a dual meet against Drake.
