HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- The Creighton men’s golf team finished its spring campaign in fourth place at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships. The championships were played at the par-70, 6,598-yard Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
The fourth-place finish is tied for CU's second-best placing at an MVC meet since 1949, matching last year's finish. Making the feat all the more impressive is that CU was picked seventh in the pre-championship poll.
The Jays finished with a team score of 903 just one shot behind third place finisher Northern Iowa. Wichita State won their fifth straight Missouri Valley title by shooting an 877 and Missouri State came in second with an 895.
Wichita State’s Hunter Sparks won the individual title shooting a 217. Andrew Luo of Evansville finished second with a 218. Creighton senior Kevin Stanek (219) earned his fourth top-five finish of the year by finishing tied for third with Missouri State’s Daily Young.
Junior John Rasmussen was the second best Bluejay golfer in the tournament. He finished tied for 14th with a 225. Senior Austin Miller and freshman Johnny Spellerberg finished tied for 23rd with a 231 and senior Jack Dressen shot a 232 which left him tied for 29th in his final collegiate meet.
Louis Cohen Boyer of Wichita State was named the Newcomer of the Year. Boyer’s teammate Rafael Becker was named the Golfer of the Year and Wichita State coach Grier Jones was named the Coach of the Year. Ryan Horner of Northern Iowa won the Elite 18 Award.
Joining Stanek on the All-Conference team were Wichita State teammates Rafael Becker, Louis Cohen Boyer, Tyler Gann, Calvin Pearson and Hunter Sparks, Missouri State’s Will Hogan and Daily Young, Jake Erickson of Southern Illinois and Andrew Luo of Evansville.
Stanek is just the second Creighton men's golfer in school history to earn all-Valley plaudits, joining John Sutko in 2007.
Coached by Chris Wiemers, the Bluejays will return five golfers for the 2012-2013 campaign.
