OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton softball team dropped a doubleheader to BIG EAST rival Georgetown by scores of 5-2 and 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at the CU Sports Complex.

Creighton (19-12, 2-2 BIG EAST) could not overcome late runs scored by Georgetown (14-12, 5-0 BIG EAST) in the twin bill.  The Jays led in both contests but the Hoyas rallied twice for the wins.

CU senior Ellen Homan led the offense for the Bluejays with three hits, two RBI and her third home run of the year on the day. Junior Liz Dike added two hits and sophomore Blake Ringle belted her second homer of the year to pick up a pair of RBI.

Creighton’s senior pitching staff of Becca Changstrom and Alexis Cantu combined for 10 strikeouts from the circle but allowed nine earned runs to Georgetown.

Changstrom earned the start in game one for the Jays.

After two scoreless innings, the visiting Hoyas opened the scoring in the top of the third frame after a walk, single and RBI double to take a 1-0 advantage.

Creighton took the lead in the bottom of the inning on Homan’s two-run homer that scored sophomore Kelsey Allender from first base to give the Bluejays a 2-1 lead.

The Hoyas struck back in the next half inning with a solo homer a single and a two-RBI double to move in front of CU by a score of 4-2.

Georgetown added a run in the top of the sixth inning on another solo home run to account for the 5-2 final.

Changstrom dropped to 11-6 on the year with the loss.

Cantu started game two in the circle for Creighton.

Like game one, Georgetown opened the scoring. In the top of the second the Hoyas utilized a double, walk and RBI single to jump out to an early 1-0 lead.

Creighton came back to take the lead in the bottom of the frame on a two-run dinger from Ringle to score freshman Jen Daro from first base to move in front 2-1.

The Bluejays added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ringle walked to open the inning followed by a single from Bri Lingl. Both runners moved up a base on a Hoya wild pitch before a bloop RBI single by Cantu to help her cause and put CU up 3-1.

Georgetown then rallied for the win in its final at-bat in the top of the seventh. The Hoyas led off with a single then two infield errors by the Jays loaded the bases with no outs. An RBI single drew GU to within one at 3-2.

But a grand slam in the next at-bat put the Hoyas ahead for good at 6-3 for the eventual final.

Cantu dropped to 4-4 on the season with the loss.

The Bluejays conclude their first home BIG EAST series on Sunday when they battle the Hoyas again at 11 a.m. CT.
