OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton softball team completed a series sweep of Providence Sunday afternoon with a 5-0 shutout of the Friars at the CU Sports Complex to advance to its first BIG EAST Softball Championship next weekend.
The Creighton (29-23. 10-10 BIG EAST) victory over Providence (6-29, 4-15 BIG EAST) coupled with conference champ DePaul’s 13-1 win at Butler propelled the Jays into their first BIG EAST Softball Championship. To accomplish their feat, the Jays scored five runs on five hits and two PC errors. Senior pitcher Becca Changstrom shut out the Friars, holding them to just three hits while striking out nine.
The Bluejays will be seeded fourth at the Championship. The Jays will battle host and top-seeded DePaul (39-9, 18-1 BIG EAST) in a BIG EAST semifinal on Friday, May 9 at 1 p.m. CT at The Ballpark at Rosemont in suburban Chicago. The other semi pits No. 2 seed St. John’s (27-22, 12-8 BIG EAST) against No. 3 Georgetown (26-21, 12-8 BIG EAST) at 3:30 p.m. CT.
Both semifinals Both semi-final games tomorrow will now be available live on FoxSportsGo and will be televised via tape delay on Fox Sports 2 (Creighton vs. DePaul at 6:30 p.m., CT; St. John’s vs. Georgetown at 8:30 p.m., CT). The winners will meet in the BIG EAST Championship Final on May 10 at 11 a.m. CT with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line. The final will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1.
Changstrom started the game in the circle for the Jays and ended each of the Friars’ first four innings with a strikeout to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.
After three scoreless frames, Creighton started the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning. A one-out single by junior Liz Dike started the rally. She later stole second and advanced to third on a fly out. CU freshman Allie Reinhart reached on a PC error that allowed Dike to score from third to put Creighton up 1-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Jays extended their lead. Freshman Jen Daro opened with a walk and advanced to second on a bunt single from classmate Jessica Lewis. A single to right field by sophomore Kelsey Allender loaded the bases for the Jays. An RBI single by senior Blair Lowe brought in a pair of runs to complete the scoring in the inning to give CU a 3-0 lead.
Creighton added two more runs in its half of the sixth inning to complete the scoring. Senior Alexis Cantu drew a walk to open the frame. Freshman Kassidy Kingsley came into the game to run at first base. Kingsley moved to second by beating out a throw on a fielder’s choice from Reinhart. Kingsley would later steal third and would later score on a PC error to put the Jays in front 4-0. An infield single by Lewis scored Reinhart to yield the final 5-0 result.
PC opened the seventh inning with a single, but after a ground out Changstrom rang up two strikeouts to earn the complete-game victory.
Changstrom gained the win to improve to 17-12 on the year.
