QUEENS, N.Y. – The Creighton softball team blanked St. John’s 4-0 in the series finale at Red Storm Field Sunday afternoon.
Creighton (26-21, 7-10 BIG EAST) senior pitcher Becca Changstrom held St. John’s (24-22, 9-8 BIG EAST) to just two hits and struck out 11 Red Storm batters. Junior Liz Dike’s three-run homer in the top of the seventh helped secure the Jays’ victory. CU senior Blair Lowe added three hits from the leadoff spot.
CU led early in the top of the second after the Bluejays loaded the bases and freshman Jessica Lewis was hit by a pitch. That lead would hold until Dike hit her 15th home run of the season.
Changstrom opened in the circle in game one for the Bluejays.
Creighton started the scoring in the top of the second inning when senior Alexis Cantu opened with a single to right and advanced to second on an error. Freshman Allie Reinhart reached on a fielder’s choice and classmate Jen Daro singled to put runners at first and second. Sophomore Blake Ringle drew a walk to load the bases before Lewis was hit by a pitch to score Reinhart and give the Jays a 1-0 edge.
After four scoreless innings, Creighton scored three more in the top of the seventh frame. A one-out single by Lewis, a fielder’s choice by senior Ellen Homan and another single from Lowe put two runners on with two outs as Dike entered the batter’s box. Dike’s three-run homer to deep center field provided the final score.
Changstrom moved to 15-12 on the season with the victory.
The Bluejays are scheduled to travel to No. 15 Missouri for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday before returning to Omaha to host Providence for Senior Weekend.
