Conference Presidents’ Council meeting, which takes place June 8.
Commissioner Doug Elgin announced a list of dates and sites for the various Missouri Valley Conference sports championships for the 2012-13 athletic season. Notably, that includes a recommendation from the league’s Joint Committee (faculty athletics representatives, directors of athletics and senior woman administrators of each institution) to bring the 2012 MVC Women’s Soccer Championship to Omaha, Neb., the 2012 MVC Men’s Soccer Championship to Peoria, Ill.; the 2012 MVC Volleyball Championship to Springfield, Mo.; the 2013 MVC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Team Championship to Wichita, Kan.; the 2013 MVC Softball Championship to Omaha, Neb.; and the 2013 Baseball Championship to Normal, Ill.
The 2012 MVC Women’s Soccer Championship will be at Omaha, Neb., and Creighton will host the tournament at Michael G. Morrison, S.J. Stadium, on Nov. 2-4. The top six teams (of seven) advance to the championship, and the top two seeds receive a bye in the first round. First-round games are on campus sites - Sunday, Oct. 28. The semifinals are Friday, Nov. 2, and the championship is Sunday, Nov. 4. The winner of the tournament receives an automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship. Last season, Illinois State won the tournament and represented the MVC in the NCAAs. Notably, Creighton has served as host for the women’s soccer championship in five of the past seven years. Completed in 2004, Morrison Stadium has a 6,000-seat capacity, and a new artificial playing surface was recently installed.
The 2012 MVC Men’s Soccer Championship will be in Peoria, Ill., and will be played at Shea Stadium, on Nov. 7-9-11. The tournament is a Wednesday-Friday-Sunday format, with six (of seven) teams advancing to the championship. The opening round will be played Wednesday, the semifinals on Friday, and the championship match on Sunday, Nov. 11. The winner of the tournament receives an automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship. It will mark the fifth time Bradley has hosted the MVC men’s soccer championship, previously doing so in 1999, 2005, 2006, and 2010. The playing surface at Shea Stadium is grass, while the facility has a 1,700-seat capacity. In 2011, Bradley (at large) and Creighton represented The Valley in the NCAA Tournament, and Creighton advanced to the national semifinals (College Cup).
The 2012 MVC Volleyball Championship is in Springfield, Mo., at Hammons Student Center. The tournament will be held on Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 22-24, with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Last year, for the fourth time in league history, at least three Missouri Valley Conference volleyball teams were selected for the NCAAs (league champion UNI was joined by at-large selections Missouri State and Wichita state). It marked the sixth straight season that multiple MVC teams were invited to the Dance. Missouri State last hosted the MVC Volleyball Championship in 2007.
The 2013 MVC Softball Championship will be played at CU Sports Complex in Omaha, Neb. Creighton will host the tournament, which will be played May 9-11. The 2012 State Farm MVC Championship will be played next week (May 23-26 in Springfield, Mo.) while the league’s regular-season concludes this weekend. Duffy Bass Field - the home of Redbird baseball - features a gated complex with seating for over 1,000 spectators, concessions, restrooms, team dugouts and a state-of-the-art press box. In 2008, the facility underwent a $3.2 million renovation, and in 2010, a new energy efficient LED scoreboard was installed beyond the right field wall. It marks the first ever MVC baseball championship in Normal, Ill.
The 2013 MVC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Team Championship will be in Wichita, Kan., and Wichita State will serve as host. The championship will be played April 26-28, 2013, at two sites in Wichita: Crestview Country Club and the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex. Home to WSU men’s and women’s tennis, the Coleman Tennis Complex features eight lighted tennis courts with spectator seating and a 2,500-square-foot-clubhouse which houses locker rooms, a lobby, foyer, snack bar, public restrooms and a covered patio area. Wichita State was also awarded women’s individual tennis meet on Oct. 5-7, 2012, while Drake will host the men’s individual meet on Jan. 18-20, 2013.
In addition to the recommendation of the championship sites up for bid, the Joint Committee reaffirmed the following pre-assigned sites for 2012-13:
