OMAHA, Neb. - Sophomore Alexis Cantu of the Creighton softball team has been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Midwest Region Team as voted on by member coaches and announced by the organization on Thursday. Cantu earned a second-team slot, becoming Creighton's first honoree since Tara Oltman and Renae Sinkler were both selected in 2010.
Cantu was a first-team all-Missouri Valley Conference pick and MVC Newcomer of the Year after making an immediate impact in her first season on The Hilltop. The Frisco, Texas native hit .357 and led the MVC with 17 home runs, an .802 slugging percentage, .547 on-base percentage and a school-record 46 walks. She also led CU with 48 RBI, 101 total bases and eight hit-by-pitch, and was flawless in the field in 25 chances. In league play, Cantu hit .400 and set MVC single-season records with 13 home runs and 34 RBI. She also led the league in total bases (70), slugging percentage (1.000) and on-base percentage (.543),
Cantu also went 8-5 in the circle, ranking second on the team in starts (16), innings (64.2) and strikeouts (49) and third with a 5.20 ERA.
Cantu is now eligible for All-America honors. Sinkler earned NFCA Third-Team All-America laurels in 2010, becoming the first Bluejay position player since 1991 to earn NFCA All-America recognition.
Creighton finished the 2012 season with a 28-25-1 record.
