TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - One day after shutting out Indiana State in a doubleheader sweep, the Creighton pitching staff allowed six runs in the first two innings of Sunday's series finale against the Sycamores as the home team snapped an 11-game losing streak with a 6-2 win over the Bluejays. Brittany Telecky pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless relief for the Bluejays, but the Creighton offense couldn't overcome the early deficit.
The Sycamores (15-30, 4-18 MVC) were held to just six hits in Saturday's doubleheader, including just two against Becca Changstrom in the opener. But on Sunday, the Indiana State offense used four singles and a walk to produce three first inning runs to take control of the game.
Jennifer Bohle's first triple as a Bluejay, one day after she collected her first Bluejay double, drove in Christa Ruf with Creighton's first run of the game in the top of the second inning to cut into ISU's lead.
But the Sycamores responded with three more runs in the bottom of the second, chasing Changstrom from the contest. Telecky entered and retired the first five hitters she faced before allowing the only base hit she surrendered in the fourth inning.
Creighton (23-25, 11-10 MVC) couldn't gain any ground on the Sycamores until an error in the top of the seventh inning allowed a second Bluejay run to score. With two outs, Blair Lowe, who had walked as a pinch-hitter to lead off the inning, scored when ISU pitcher Lindsey Beisser committed an error on a ball hit by Liz McKewon. Beisser recovered to get the final out and prevent the Sycamores from getting swept in the three-game series.
Beisser allowed only five Bluejay hits and one earned run in improving to 4-5 in her injury-shortened season.
Changstrom (16-9) took the loss for the Bluejays, lasting just 1.2 innings and allowing six runs. Telecky kept the Bluejays in the game as she tossed 4.1 innings of scoreless relief, one day after she pitched 4.1 scoreless innings in her start against the Sycamores. The rookie even added a base hit off the bench.
Creighton won't play any midweek games as the student-athletes take final exams before hosting league-leading Illinois State in the final weekend of the regular-season. The Bluejays and Redbirds (33-15, 19-4 MVC) will play a noon doubleheader next Saturday at the CU Sports Complex, honoring McKewon - Creighton's only senior - between games. The two teams will conclude the regular-season next Sunday at noon.
