(W) Basketball Coaching Staff
Steve Huber
Assistant Coach

Steve Huber is in his seventh season on the Creighton coaching staff.  The Illinois State graduate has previously served as a head coach at the NAIA level and been involved with coaching for over 25 years.  He serves as the recruiting coordinator for the Bluejays.

Along with his recruiting duties, Huber works with post players on the court and coordinates team travel.  The Bluejays advanced to the postseason in five of his first six seasons on the bench.  He helped
former Bluejay forward Sara Cain double her scoring average between her sophomore and junior seasons, as she earned Second Team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors as a senior.

Huber has also helped the outside shooting of former Bluejay all-conference performers Sam Schuett and Megan Neuvirth.  Huber worked with Neuvirth prior to her junior season, helping her shoot 35.7 percent (51-143) from three-point range after she was a combined 6-for-32 (.188) from long range in her first two seasons.  Schuett ranked 18th in the NCAA in three-point percentage in 2009-10, leading the MVC by shooting 42.2 percent from beyond the arc – as Huber’s coaching helped Schuett to a 10 percent jump in her long range accuracy between her sophomore and junior seasons.

Huber came to Omaha following a two-year stint as an assistant at the University of Central Missouri.  In his two seasons at UCM, where he also served as the recruiting coordinator, the Jennies advanced to the NCAA Division II tournament twice and compiled a 45-18 record.

Prior to his time at Central Missouri, he worked as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Louisville and San Diego State.  His recruiting class at Louisville was given top-25 recognition, and he had honorable mention recruiting classes in his time in San Diego.  He broke into the Division I ranks as an assistant at Bradley during the 1993-94 season.

Huber spent five seasons as a head coach at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan., from 1994-99.  He guided the Ravens to three NAIA national tournaments, two conference titles and a 108-55 record.  He was tabbed the NAIA District Three Coach of the Year in 1997-98 and twice earned conference Coach of the Year honors.  His accomplishments at Benedictine are even more impressive when considering the Ravens had just 10 combined wins in the three seasons prior to his arrival, including an 0-25 season the year before his hiring.

He began his coaching career on the men’s side, serving as an assistant at St. Cloud State in Minnesota from 1982-84.  He was also a men’s assistant at Northwest Missouri State from 1986-88, earning his master’s degree in education from the school in 1988.

During the 1990s, Huber also branched out as owner of High Five Basketball Camps, and coordinator of the Kansas City Junior College Jamboree, one of the largest preseason JUCO tournaments in the nation.  High Five Basketball Camps, a college exposure basketball camp, was one of the top recruiting camps in the nation.  His scouting service had over 150 subscribers, including more than 110 Division I institutions.

Huber, a Springfield, Ill., native, earned his undergraduate degree in education from Illinois State in 1982, before receiving his master’s from Northwest Missouri State in 1988.
He and his wife, Linda, have two children, Arielle (21) and Blake (17), and reside in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Flanery on Huber:
“Steve’s experience can’t be overvalued.  His recruiting contacts and experience are indispensable. He is passionate and incredibly connected when it comes to recruiting.  Steve believes in the direction of this program and is committed to making it even better.  He has a great rapport with the players, he does a good job of teaching the fundamentals and the players buy in to his way of communicating.”
