DES MOINES, Iowa – The Creighton softball team defeated former conference foe Drake 4-2 in eight innings in a single game at the Bulldogs’ Buel Field on Wednesday.
Creighton (19-10) won its tenth straight contest heading into their BIG EAST home-opening series against Georgetown this weekend. Senior Becca Changstrom struck out eight and held Drake to just four hits in the contest to improve to 11-5 after the complete-game win.
After the Bluejays jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, Drake (6-20) battled back with two in the bottom of the fourth to knot the game at 2-2 and eventually send it into extra innings.
CU posted seven hits from seven different batters to secure the win. Senior Ellen Homan continued her hot bat at the plate with two RBI in the game. Sophomore Kelsey Allender secured the game-winning run in the top of the eighth with an RBI single to right field.
Changstrom earned the start for the Jays in the circle.
Creighton started the scoring in the top of the second after a scoreless frame. Changstrom bolstered her effort from the plate with an one-out RBI double to left center to score freshman Jen Daro to give the Jays a 1-0 advantage. Sophomore Katie Pascuzzi came into the game to run and later scored on a two-out RBI single from Homan to give CU a 2-0 lead. Drake was able to get out of the inning with the bases loaded.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. A single, walk and illegal pitch put two Drake runners in scoring position with just one out. A wild pitch scored the first Drake run followed by a passed ball for the second score to tie the game at 2-2.
Neither team mustered much offense over the next three innings to send the contest into extra innings.
Creighton then posted two runs in the top of the eighth. Daro was hit by a pitch with one out and later stole second. Freshman Kassidy Kingsley came on to run at second just before Changstrom drew a walk. Allender’s RBI single to right score Kingsley from second for the game winner. Changstrom later scored on an RBI single off the bat of Homan to secure the 4-2 final.
The Bluejays host their first BIG EAST series this weekend when they battle Georgetown beginning with a doubleheader slated for noon at the CU Sports Complex. The Jays and Hoyas both enter the series undefeated in conference play after they won their league-opening series last weekend.
