Softball Splits a Pair at Rebel Spring Games
Creighton (9-10) faced former Missouri Valley Conference rival Indiana State (12-7) to begin the day. CU scored both of its runs during a rally in the bottom of the sixth. Three singles led to a pair of runs that would hold up for the Jays’ victory. Senior Becca Changstrom pitched her third consecutive complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits to ISU.
Game two featured two teams on multiple-game win streaks as the Jays entered the contest as winners of five straight and Utah Valley (5-13) owned a four-game win streak. The Wolverines scored in three of the first four innings to go up 4-0. The Bluejays could only manage four hits in the game. A late run by Creighton in the seventh yielded the final score of 4-1.
Changstrom earned the start in the circle for the Jays against Indiana State.
After five scoreless innings, Creighton scored it only runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior Blair Lowe opened the frame with a single up the middle. A one-out single up the middle from junior Bri Lingl scored Lowe from second to give the Jays a 1-0 edge.
That score would hold up as Changstrom closed out the Sycamores’ final at-bat in the top of the seventh. She improved to 5-5 on the year with the win while posting seven strikeouts.
Cantu started game two in the circle for the Jays against Utah Valley.
Following a scoreless first frame, Utah Valley got on the board in the bottom of the second with a two-out rally. A walk, steal and a single helped the Wolverines take a 1-0 lead.
UVU added two more runs in the third. A single, passed ball, CU error and multiple steals to lead off the inning resulted in two runs for the Wolverines in the inning to give UVU a 3-0 advantage.
The Wolverines’ final run came in the bottom of the fourth. Three singles and a steal led to a score for Utah Valley and a 4-0 lead.
Creighton scored its run in the top of the seventh inning. Dike laid down a bunt single then advanced to second on an error. Sophomore Blake Ringle connected on a two-out RBI double to score Dike to cut the lead to three at 4-1 before UVU notched the final out to claim the win.
Cantu fell to 2-3 with the loss. The Bluejays will take a day off from competition on Wednesday before resuming the Rebel Spring Games early Thursday morning.
Creighton is in the midst of playing 12 games in a span of seven days. CU will play South Dakota twice, and one game apiece against Manhattan, UMass-Lowell, Bucknell, Indiana State, Utah Valley, Saint Peter’s, Siena, Howard, Army and Albany.
