Softball Extends Win Streak to Four with Sweep
Creighton (8-9) scored the lone run of the game against South Dakota (10-8) in the third inning off of an RBI single by senior Blair Lowe. Classmate Becca Changstrom held the Coyotes in check allowing just four hits while striking out 12 batters in a complete game shutout. It marked the first time this season that USD did not score a run.
In game two, the Bluejays went on the attack early against Bucknell (4-9). Creighton scored all five of its runs in the first three innings. Junior Bri Lingl led the Jays at the plate with a 3-for-3 outing and an RBI. Senior Alexis Cantu and sophomore Blake Ringle each pitched in with RBI singles in a pinch-hitting role.
Changstrom earned the start in the circle for the Jays against South Dakota.
Creighton scored it only run in the top of the third inning. With one out, freshman Jessica Lewis suffered a hit by a pitch to get on base. Changstrom laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Lewis to second with two outs. Lowe then connected on a single to score Lewis from second for the game’s lone score.
USD spread four hits across four different innings. The Coyotes left four on base. USD’s best scoring chance came in the first when Yvon Minogue tripled with two outs, but the Coyotes could not convert.
Changstrom improved to 4-5 on the year with the win after recording her second straight shutout.
The two teams will meet again for a rematch on Saturday afternoon at the Games.
Junior Mac Millspaugh started game two in the circle for the Jays.
Lowe played a role in the Jays’ first run in game two versus Bucknell. CU opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Lowe hit a one-out single. After stealing second she advanced to third on a wild pitch. Lingl then hit her first of three singles to bring Lowe across for a 1-0 Bluejay advantage.
Creighton added a pair of runs in the second. Junior Alex Millspaugh drew a walk to open the inning. A sacrifice bunt by sophomore Kelsey Allender moved Millspaugh to second. Ringle then came on to pinch hit and notched an RBI single to score Millspaugh to put CU up 2-0.
With one out on the board, sophomore Katie Pascuzzi singled to put runners on the corners. Lewis re-entered the game to run at third. Pascuzzi then stole second which allowed Lewis to score on the throw to provide Creighton a 3-0 lead.
CU registered two more runs in the top of the third. After a pitching change by Bucknell, Lingl hit a one-out single. Sophomore Cassie Sharon then drew a walk. With two outs, Cantu stepped in to pinch hit and made good on the at-bat with a two-RBI single to score the base runners to put the Jays up 5-0.
Bucknell scored in the fourth after a single and Bluejay error to cut the lead down to 5-1.
The Bison posted two more scores in the top of the fifth. With one out Creighton made a pitching change to bring in senior Brittany Telecky. Bucknell rallied with two outs, posting a walk, back-to-back singles to go with a CU error to plate a pair of runs to close to within two of Creighton at 5-3.
Bucknell threatened in the top of the seventh. The Bison loaded the bases with one out but the Bluejays converted two infield outs to secure the victory.
Millspaugh evened her record at 1-1 with the win.
Creighton is in the midst of playing 12 games in a span of seven days. CU will play South Dakota twice, and one game apiece against Manhattan, UMass-Lowell, Bucknell, Indiana State, Utah Valley, Saint Peter’s, Siena, Howard, Army and Albany.
