- The Creighton Softball team had a three-game winning streak snapped, suffering a pair of losses on Friday at the UTA Hilton Invitational in Arlington, Texas. Creighton dropped a 7-3 decision to Texas Tech on Friday afternoon before losing an 8-0 game to host UT Arlington two hours later.
With the losses, Creighton dropped to 3-4 on the young season. Two weeks ago, Creighton started 0-2 at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, only the rebound with three straight wins. The Bluejays will look to emulate that success with two games Saturday and one more Sunday.Texas Tech 7, Creighton 3
In Creighton's first game of the day, Texas Tech scored five runs in its final two at-bats to defeat the Bluejays, 7-3.
After TTU dented the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third inning, Creighton answered with a homer by Alexis Cantu
to even the score. The round-tripper to center also scored Liz Dike
, who had opened the frame with a bunt single.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Texas Tech scored three times. Kierra Miles had a two-run single to give the Red Raiders a 4-2 lead, and she would later score on a single by Samantha Camello.
TTU added two insurance runs in the sixth on a solo homer from Sydni Tapia and Miles later collected her fifth RBI of the game with a two-out single to make it 7-2.
Creighton plated an unearned run in its last at-bat in the seventh inning before Gretchen Aucoin slammed the door to earn her third save of the young season.
Creighton had five players collect one hit each, while Becca Changstrom
dropped to 2-2 with the complete game loss.
Brittany Talley (4-0) earned the win for Texas Tech, allowing two runs in five innings before Aucoin threw the final six outs. Miles was 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in five.UT Arlington 8, Creighton 0 (5 Innings)
Creighton was limited to two hits in the second game of the day, losing to host UT Arlington 8-0 in five innings.
The Mavericks scored the only run it would need in the bottom of the first on a Rebecca Stokes double against CU starter Mac Millspaugh
, who was making her first start in the circle as a Bluejay.
UTA scored six runs on five hits in the third inning to blow the game wide open, chasing Millspaugh in the process. The Mavericks strung together three straight singles before Jolene Schaefer's homer made it 5-0. Reliever Brittany Telecky
couldn't stop the hosts' momentum, allowing two more runs before finally coaxing a groundout to escape the jam.
The game ended in the bottom of the fifth when Britnea Barilli singled to score Marisa Datko and end the game via run-rule.
Callie Collins (3-3) earned the victory for UTA, authoring a two-hit shutout while walking one and striking out eight.
Creighton's only hits came from Blair Lowe
and Cantu, who each managed singles. Millspaugh surrended five runs in 2.1 innings to fall to 0-1, while Telecky allowed three runs in 2.1 innings of her first relief appearance of 2014.
Creighton returns to the diamond on Saturday with an 11:30 am rematch vs. Texas Tech before another rematch with UT Arlington at 4:30 pm.
