Release: 02/09/2013
Junior Alexis Cantu hammered her first homer of the season Saturday.

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Creighton softball suffered a 4-3 defeat to Stephen F. Austin in its final game of Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State Saturday.

Three Bluejays connected on a pair of hits including junior Blair Lowe, senior Amy Baker and freshman Kelsey Allender. Junior Alexis Cantu drilled her first home run of the season for the Jays in the game.

Creighton (2-3) totaled nine hits against Stephen F. Austin (2-2), but only brought three runs across the plate.  Both teams left nine runners on base in the game.

Junior Becca Changstrom started in the circle for Creighton against Carlie Thomas of SFA.

After a scoreless first inning, SFA opened the scoring in the bottom of the second. Two hit batters put runners on first and second for the Ladyjacks with one out. A Bluejay error on a fielder's choice play loaded the bases before back-to-back singles scored a single run each to put SFA out front 2-0. Stephen F. Austin left the bases loaded after Changstrom rung up a strikeout and an infield popup to get CU out of the inning.

The Ladyjacks added another run in the bottom of the third. After a leadoff double, Changstrom notched a pair of K's but an errant CU throw allowed a run to score to make it 3-0 SFA.

Creighton fought back with two runs in the top of the fourth. Cantu opened the frame with a bomb over the fence in left center to cut the lead to 3-1. Senior Sammy Snygg followed with a single and junior MaKenzie Michael reached on an SFA error to put two runners in scoring position. A single off the bat of Allender scored Snygg to make it a 3-2 Stephen F. Austin lead.

The Bluejays knotted the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning. A one-out double by Lowe started the rally. A double from Amy Baker drove in Lowe to tie the game. The Jays threatened with two runners in scoring position but Thomas struck out two Jays to end the inning.

SFA took the lead again in the bottom of the sixth after a two-out solo home run to put the Ladyjacks ahead 4-3.

Baker singled to start the seventh, but the Bluejays could not bring the tying run across the plate.

Changstrom took the loss to fall to 1-2 while Thomas earned the win to improve to 2-0 for SFA.

Creighton has a full week off from competition before traveling to Conway, Ark., to take part in the Central Arkansas Tournament Feb. 22-24.
