Baseball Loses Third Straight, 7-5 to Sam Houston State
HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The baseball team (0-3) lost its third straight game Saturday evening, 7-5 to Sam Houston State (3-0) at Don Sanders Stadium in Huntsville, Texas. Darin Ruf was a bright spot for the Jays as he tied a career-high going 4-4 with five RBI.
Creighton threatened in the top of the first, as the team loaded the bases courtesy of a walk to Ruf and hit by pitches to Nick Becker and Vicente Cafaro. The Bluejays couldn't capitalize however, as T.J. Roemmich flew out to left to end the threat.
Sam Houston State picked up where they left off in the first game offensively, as the team was able to get a pair of two-out doubles from Seth Hammock and Jon Reed to make it a 1-0 game at the end of one inning.
The Bluejays then loaded the bases again in the second inning and Darin Ruf gave them the lead as he singled into left field to bring home Carson Vitale and Robbie Knight, giving Creighton a 2-1 lead after two innings.
The Bearkats then recaptured the lead in the bottom of the third, thanks to a pass ball and two fielding errors by Creighton. Scott Thornburg had a ball shoot off his legs which allowed runners to advance to second and third. Third baseman Jimmy Swift then had a throw go wide of first allowing a run to score, followed by an Elliot Soto fielding error, allowing the second run of the inning to score.
Creighton was able to answer right back as the team had runners on first and second with two outs when Ruf came to bat. He knocked in his second run of the day with a single to left to make the game 3-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
SHSU got the lead back in the bottom of the fifth stringing together three straight hits, including two doubles, to make it a 5-3 Bearkat advantage. It put the game out of reach in the seventh inning as Nick Zaleski hit a two-run double with two outs, to give Sam Houston State a four-run lead.
Creighton would put another rally together in the eighth as Ruf hit a two-run triple to deep centerfield.
Bluejay starter Jonas Dufek (0-1) went 4.2 innings allowing five runs, of which just three were earned. He struck out two batters without walking a man.
Creighton finishes the series with Sam Houston State Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
