Huntsville, Texas - The baseball team dropped its season opener 8-6 to Sam Houston State Friday night in Huntsville, Texas. The loss snapped a two-game season-opener winning streak for the Bluejays, and the team is now 3-3 in season openers under head coach Ed Servais.

Creighton (0-1) got on the board first, as sophomore third baseman Jimmy Swift hit his first career home run, with a two-run shot to left.

Sam Houston State (1-0) then broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the third as Braeden Riley hit a solo homerun to left, giving the Bearkats a 3-2 advantage. SHSU threatened for more with runners on first and second with one out before Darin Ruf snared a line drive, before proceeding to double off Seth Hammock at first.

Bluejay starting pitcher Jeremy Hauer (0-1) got himself out of more trouble in the fourth inning as there were runners on second and third with one out. He then struck out the next two batters to keep the deficit at one.

The two teams traded a pair of runs in the fifth to make the game 5-4 in favor of the Bearkats heading into the 6th. Jack VanLeur was able to get Creighton out of a bases loaded jam by inducing a ground ball doubleplay to end the inning.

SHSU broke the game open in the sixth as five straight men reached base enroute to scoring three times, making it an 8-4 game.

Creighton tacked on two runs in the eighth, courtesy of Nick Becker's first career double and RBI with a drive to the gap, sending home Darin Ruf. Jimmy Swift then had his third RBI of the game, also a career-high to make the score 8-6.

That is as close as the Bluejays got, as Darin Ruf flew out to rightfield to end the game with a man on second in the ninth.

Creighton will be back in action Saturday with a doubleheader against the Bearkats beginning at 1:00 p.m.

NOTES: Creighton got off to a shaky start as Bearkat starter Dallas Gallant struck out the side in order in the top of the first...Hauer then came back with a five-pitch inning of his own in the bottom of the first, thanks to diving catches by centerfielder Robbie Knight and rightfielder T.J. Roemmich...At the plate Roemmich had a career-high three hits, going 3-4...Scott Thornburg got his first career hit with a pinch hit in the seventh.
