OMAHA, Neb. - For the second straight season and the eighth time in Ed Servais' career, the Creighton baseball team opened up the home portion of its schedule with a win.  The Bluejays posted 2-0 win over BYU on Tuesday night in front of 3,153 fans on a beautiful March evening.

The win marks the first shutout on the season for the Jays, who improve to 8-6 on the year.  Ty Blach improves to 3-0, striking out a batter in his pre-determined 1.0 innings of work.  Reese McGraw faced four batters in his 1.0 innings of work, picking up his second save of the season.

Creighton's pitching staff tamed the BYU bats, just one night after the Cougars put up 19 runs on 18 hits in a win over Nebraska-Omaha.  The pitching parade, started by Blach and closed by Spomer, featured Erik Mattingly, Shane Liska, Mark Winkelman and Kurt Spomer.  The six pitchers allowed just five hits, all singles, and did not allow a free base all night.

The Bluejays got on the board in the first inning, and are now 6-3 when scoring the first run of the game.  After Blach stranded a BYU runner in the top of the inning, Anthony Bemboom and Nick Judkins reached base via a walk and hit-by-pitch, advancing 90 feet with a fly ball to center.  An errant thrown in an attempt to catch Bemboom at third allowed the senior to trot into home, the first run of the game.

Creighton added an additional run in the bottom of the seventh inning.  After Brennan Murphy reached safely on a bunt, Bemboom doubled into left field, scoring Murphy from first base.

The Jays held a 7-5 edge in hits on the night, with seven different players picking up a hit.

The Bluejays will play the second of the five game home stand tomorrow, hosting Louisiana Tech at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha. The first pitch is set for 6:00 pm.

NOTES:  What a difference a year makes.  Last year in the season opener, fans had to bundle up and brave the cold and snow to see the first game at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.  This year, it was 78 degrees and sunny for the first pitch of the season ... Bluejay first baseman Nick Judkins has now been plunked a pair of times in two games straight.  He is now tied for most on the team with five ... Creighton is now 9-1 in the last 10 home field openers, including an 8-1 mark under head coach Ed Servais ... Ty Blach has now made the two TD Ameritrade Park Omaha season starts, as the southpaw tossed 1.0 innings in the April 19, 2011 opener against Nebraska.
