OMAHA, Neb. - Senior Mike Gerber was selected in the 15th Round of the 2014 MLB Draft on Saturday, June 7 with the 460th overall pick. Gerber is the second Bluejay chosen in the 2014 MLB Draft as Jake Peter was taken on Friday in the seventh round by the Chicago White Sox.
Gerber becomes the 18th selection in the MLB draft in the 11 years Ed Servais has been at the helm of Bluejay baseball. Gerber closed the 2014 season as the team and BIG EAST leader with 11 home runs. His 49 RBI also led Creighton and tied for the top spot in the BIG EAST.
In addition Gerber led Creighton and in the BIG EAST with 104 total bases. He finished the season with a .274 average, including 23 extra base hits (11 home runs, 10 doubles and two triples).
Gerber holds the distinction of being the first player to homer in TD Ameritrade Park Omaha (TDAPO) as well as being the only player to hit two home runs in the game at TDAPO (vs. Stephen F. Austin on May 13, 2014). Gerber leaves the Bluejays tied for 10th overall in home runs with 27. Gerber has the overall record for home runs in a single-season at TDAPO with four in 2014 and in a career, belting five.
Gerber was previously drafted in the 40th round by the New York Yankees in 2010, but chose to attend Creighton.
