Scouting the Huskers (28-17, 10-5 Big Ten) Nebraska has gone 8-4 since defeating the Bluejays, 4-2, on April 8. The Huskers just had a seven-game road winning streak snapped on Sunday, falling at Michigan.
Nebraska is planning to start left hander Kyle Kubat on Tuesday night. Kubat will be making his eighth start of the season, he has a 5.68 ERA. Kubat has been a bit wild this season, allowing 16 walks and five hit batters in 31.2 innings.
Offensively the Huskers have been a much more dangerous team since leaving TD Ameritrade in early April, scoring 80 runs over 12 games (6.67 runs per game). Nine different Huskers are hitting .294 or better, including six over .300.
Final Regular Season Matchup Has Been Pivotal for the Bluejays Since 1988, Creighton has won the final regular season meeting with Nebraska six times (1991, 1992, 2005, 2007, 2011 & 2012). Each victory proved to be a precursor to a trip to the NCAA Regionals.
The last time Creighton made the NCAA Tournament without claiming the final regular season meeting with Nebraska was in 2000.
Adept at Avoiding the Sweep Creighton was down 2-0 to Nebraska in the season series in both 2011 and 2012, but were able to avoid the sweep with a 9-8 win in 2011 and with an 8-1 victory in 2012. The last time Nebraska swept the Bluejays came in 2008. Creighton’s last sweep of the Huskers came in 1974.
Bluejays Channeling Their Inner Mr. Cub Three times in 2014 the Bluejays have played a doubleheader, due to scheduling (April 5 vs. North Dakota) or looming weather (April 12 vs. Georgetown & April 26 vs. Butler).
Sophomore Reagan Fowler has made the most of the extra swings, posting a staggering .619 average (13-of-21) with four doubels, two troples and 13 RBI to lead Creighton to a 6-0 record.
In addition to Fowler, Jake Peter is 11-for-22 in the six games, while Ryan Fitzgerald is 10-for-26 (.385) in the contests.
Warren Collects His Tenth Straight Win Despite seeing his scoreless inning streak stopped at 17.1 on Friday, April 25 against Butler, sophomore Matt Warren moved to 9-0 on the season with an 8-1 Bluejays’ victory. Warren also earned a win in his last decision in 2013, giving him 10 consecutive victories.
The last Bluejay to win at least 10 straight was Marc Lewis (2004-07), Lewis went 7-0 in 2006 and won his first four decisions in 2007.
Warren is the first Bluejay starter to open a single season at 9-0 since Peyton Lewis in 1999 and is the first Creighton pitcher to open a season with at least nine wins since Scott Reese went 12-0 in 2005.
Fowler’s Walk Off Single Helps Him Snag Another BIG EAST Player of the Week Fowler continued his stellar play in 2014, delivering a walk off single to lift Creighton past Butler, 2-1, in the opening game of a doubleheader on Saturday, April 26.
Fowler closed a 3-1 week for the Bluejays .692 (9-of-13) with four runs scored, three RBI, a .769 slugging percentage and a .765 on-base percentage as he drew four walks. Fowler also swiped a base in his only attempt. His efforts earned the Omaha native his second BIG EAST Player of the Week honor in the past three weeks.
Lopez Stars in Home Alone Freshman Nicky Lopez became the first Bluejay since Jimmy Swift on May 26, 2011 to steal home as Lopez and Brad McKewon executed a double steal in the third inning. McKewon drew the throw to first, allowing Lopez to swipe home.
Elman and Albrecht Shine in Twin Bill Starting pitching has been a challenge for the Bluejays in 2014, but that may be changing as sophomore Taylor Elman and freshman Jeff Albrecht both authored quality starts as the Bluejays swept Butler in a doubleheader on April 26.
Elman held the Bulldogs to one run on five hits in seven innings, but came away with a no-decision in the opener. Albrecht, meanwhile, notched his first victory as a Bluejay in the second game, holding Butler to two runs on four hits in 6.1 innings.
