Baseball Sweeps Butler, 2-1 and 4-2

OMAHA, Neb. - Behind strong performances from starters Taylor Elman and Jeff Albrecht, the Creighton baseball team swept Butler in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 26 by the scores of 2-1 and 4-2.

The victories lifted Creighton to 23-13-1 on the season and 8-1 in the BIG EAST conference, while Butler fell to 16-26 overall and 4-8 in conference play.

Game 1: Creighton 2, Butler 1

Tied at 1-1 entering the bottom of the ninth, Creighton got a lift from sophomore Reagan Fowler as he laced a walk off single to right-center to give the Bluejays a 2-1 win.  Sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald opened the inning with a single to left-center.  He moved to second on a sacrifice from junior Jake Peter, then with two outs in the inning Fowler connected on the Bluejays seventh hit of the game.

Creighton closer Bryan Sova (3-0) notched his third win of the season with two innings of flawless relief.

Butler starter, Billy Laing, seemed to be made of teflon as he worked out of bases loaded jams in the second and third.  Finally in the fifth the Bluejays pushed across a run as sophomore Joey Mancuso worked a bases loaded walk to force home Fitzgerald.  It was the ninth walk of the game by Laing.

Elman authored his best outing of the season, holding Butler to one earned run in seven innings but did not factor in the decision.  The only run Elman surrendered came in the seventh inning on an RBI single up the middle from Alex Horowitz.  Elman allowed five hits and walked one, while striking out four.

Game 2: Creighton 4, Butler 2

Fowler got the Bluejays off to an earlier start in game two, opening the sceond inning with a double.  Bunt singles from juniors Landon Lucansky and Kevin Lamb provided Creighton with a 1-0 edge.

The Bluejays added two more runs in the fifth as Fowler and Lucansky scored on RBI knocks from sophomore Brett Murray and Lamb.

Butler closed the gap with an RBI triple in the top of the seventh from Michael Fries, chasing Albrecht.  Marco Caponi greeted Creighton reliever Max Ising with an RBI double down the left field line, but Ising stopped the Bulldogs in their tracks.

Sophomore John Oltman and junior Mark Lukowski closed out the final six outs of the game as Albrecht picked up his first win (1-0) as a Bluejay.

Creighton added an insurance run in the bottom half of the seventh, capitalizing on a two-base error by Butler via an RBI single from Fowler.

Albrecht allowed two runs on four hits and three walks, while Lukowski earned his first save of 2014 by getting the final four outs of the contest.

Creighton returns to the diamond on Tuesday, April 29 as the Bluejays play the final game of the season against Nebraska at 6:30 pm.
