Release: 03/28/2014

OMAHA, Neb. - Sophomore John Oltman retired the final two batters of the ninth, leaving the bases loaded to preserve a 4-3 win for the Creighton baseball squad over Kansas State on Friday, March 28.

The win lifted the Bluejays to 12-7-1 on the season, while Kansas State fell to 15-10 overall.

Creighton got on the board in the fourth as senior Mike Gerber lifted a soft single to center, then sophomore Reagan Fowler reached a ball that deflected off the glove of Kansas State starter, Levi MaVorhis.  After a bunt from junior Kevin Lamb moved both Bluejay runners into scoring position, sophomore Brett Murray connected on a two-run single to left center to make it 2-0.

Kansas State got on the board with an unearned run in the sixth, but Creighton came right back with two more to extend its lead to 4-1 in the bottom half of the frame.  Lamb plated the first run, reaching on an RBI fielder's choice, then Landon Lucansky was plunked with the bases loaded to force in the fourth Bluejay run.

The game remained 4-1 into the ninth, when the Wildcat bats showed some life.  The first three Kansas State hitters reached in the ninth, then Ross Kivett made it 4-3 with a two-run single to right-center.  After a sacrifice bunt put two men in scoring position, head coach Ed Servais called on Oltman.  The Cortland, Neb. native issued an intentional walk to load the bases then induced a short fly out to left followed by a line out to end the game.  It was Oltman's first save as a Bluejay.

Creighton starter Matt Warren moved to 5-0, allowing just an unearned run in 6.1 innings, while MaVorhis fell to 3-3, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk in 5.1 innings.

The Bluejays and Wildcats continue their three-game series on Saturday, March 29 at 2 pm.
