Down 6-0 After Five, Baseball Rallies for 7-6 (10) Win at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Down 6-0 after five innings, the Creighton Baseball team rallied for a 7-6 10-inning win at Charlotte on Friday, Feb. 28. The win is the Bluejays third straight, moving Creighton to 3-4 on the season.  Charlotte, meanwhile, dropped to 2-5 following its fourth consecutive loss.

Trailing 6-0 entering the top of the sixth inning, the Bluejays had the advantage of the top of their order coming to the plate.  Consecutive singles from senior Brad McKewon and sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald set the table, one out later senior Mike Gerber loaded the bags via a short single to center. Creighton plated its first run on an four-pitch walk to sophomore Reagan Fowler.  Junior Kevin Lamb followed suit with an RBI walk, working the free pass after getting to a full count.

Eight Bluejays came to the plate in the sixth and the momentum of the game began to turn. While Creighton's bullpen held the 49ers in check, the Bluejays went back to work in the seventh.  This time freshman Nicky Lopez got the rally started with a pinch-hit single to right.  McKewon laced a single through the left side to put runners at first and second.  Fitzgerald moved up both runners with a sacrifice bunt, then junior Jake Peter lined a two-run double down the right field line to make it 6-4. Peter took third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI ground-out from Gerber.

Down just one run the Bluejays stranded a leadoff single in the eighth, but it set up the top of the order for the ninth.  Once more McKewon reached base, legging out an infield single.  One out later, Peter ripped a single through the right side to put runners at the corners with one down.  Gerber made the most of the opportunity with the game-tying single through the left side.

While the offense gets the headlines, the Creighton bullpen set the stage for the Bluejays epic comeback by holding Charlotte to two innings in six innings..

Sophomore Will Bamesberger took over from starter, Taylor Elman, with scoreless frame in the fifth and working around a single and a walk to keep Charlotte off the board in the sixth.  Junior Max Ising took over in the seventh, allowing one hit in each of his two innings.  After the Bluejays knotted the game at 6-6, Creighton turned to senior Bryan Sova to get the game to extra innings. Sova needed just nine pitches in a perfect ninth to set the stage for the tenth.

With all the momentum going the Bluejays' way, sophomore Brett Murray opened the tenth with a double to right center.  Pinch-hitter Brandon Mikulka moved Murray to third with a sacrifice bunt, then Lopez lifted a sacrifice fly to left to give Creighton the lead.

Sova continued his dominance in the tenth, retiring the 49ers in order to earn his first victory (1-0) of the season.  Charlotte's Nate Traugh took the loss (0-1), allowing one run on one hit in 1.1 innings of relief.

The Bluejays and 49ers continue their three-game series on Saturday, March 1 at 1:00 pm.
