OMAHA, Neb. - One of the most dominating left handed pitchers in Creighton baseball history, Bluejay junior Ty Blach has been selected in the fifth round of the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the San Francisco Giants organization. He was picked as the No. 178 overall pick in this year's draft.

Blach becomes the 14th selection in the MLB draft in the nine years Ed Servais has been at the helm of Bluejay baseball.  He is the fifth pitcher that has been picked up since Bluejay pitching coach Rob Smith came to the program in 2007, most recently being Jonas Dufek, picked in the ninth round last season by the Houston Astros organization.

Blach becomes Creighton's highest draft pick since Ryan Gripp signed with the Cubs in the third round (No. 110 overall) in the 1999 season.  He is also the highest drafted Bluejay pitcher since Rick Heiserman (3rd round) and Dan Hower (4th round) were both selected in the 1994 draft.

The Centennial, Colo., native closes his junior season at Creighton with a career 2.76 ERA, putting the southpaw in second place on the Creighton all-time career charts.  He led the nation with 21 starts this season, compiling a 6-6 mark on the mound.  Blach saved his best games for the final portion of his junior season, throwing four complete games in the final half of the season, including a one-hit shut out in the MVC Tournament opener this season against Indiana State and his 8.0 innings of work at UCLA in the opening game of the 2012 Los Angeles Regional.

Blach was named an MVC First Team Scholar-Athlete in 2011, as well as to the MVC second team.   He was tabbed a CoSIDA Academic All-America last season, while he was named a third team Freshman All-American in 2010.

The Bluejays finished the 2012 season with a 28-30 record, the program's first team to win the MVC Tournament and make it to the Regional final in the same season.  The group also has the most successful postseason mark under Servais, holding a 6-2 postseason record (4-0 in the MVC Tournament and 2-2 in the Los Angeles Regional).
