ST. LOUIS, Mo.- Senior Alex Staehely was named to the MVC Baseball Scholar-Athlete Team on Monday, June 3. It is the third time in his four seasons that Staehely claimed this award, earning First Team selections in 2010 and 2011. This season he earned Honorable Mention.
A middle of the order hitter for Creighton throughout the season, Staehley closed 2013 with a .251 average. He was second on the squad with two home runs and finished third for the Jays with 29 RBI. Of his 43 hits, 15 were of the extra-base variety, including a team-best 13 doubles. Staehely capped his Creighton career with an All-MVC Second Team selection. In the the classroom, the senior posted a semester GPA of 3.80 in 15 units to bring his cumulative mark to 3.67.
The criteria for the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team voting parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves, with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
